German ambassador Walter J Lindner’s visit to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur and his meeting with the outfit’s chief, Mohan Bhagwat, has raised many eyebrows. After the meeting, the envoy tweeted about his visit and his “long meeting with its Sarsanghchalak (Chief) Dr Mohan Bhagwat”. Ambassador Lindner also informed his Twitter followers that the RSS was founded in 1925 and is “the world’s largest voluntary organisation—though not uncontroversially perceived throughout its history…”.
While it is usual for envoys to meet political leaders, Lindner’s outreach to the RSS has created a flutter, for the outfit is not a political party—at least it maintains so— and has a Hindutva agenda. Following the envoy’s visit, the RSS Twitter handle took note of it saying he “met Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan ji Bhagwat today at Nagpur. He also visited the ancestral home of Dr Hedgewar ji, the founder of RSS & paid his respects at Smriti Mandir.”
