Craving For European Support Against U.S. Sanctions, Iran Holds Out A Warning

Has Iran drawn a line in the sand by exceeding the stockpile of enriched uranium permitted under its nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action? The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that Iran has breached the stockpile limits.

Iran has warned it will no longer respect the stockpile limits set by the nuclear deal if the UK, France and Germany, all signatories to the deal, do nothing to mitigate the effect of U.S. sanctions. The sources confirmed that Iran was hoping for more resolute action by the UK, France and Germany in support of Iran.

“We’ve done our duty and the IAEA has announced it 15 times but the Europeans didn’t do anything,” the sources said, adding, “it was mere flag waving and telling Iran to do more,” when they should have been directing their energies at the U.S.

“We are still committed to the deal but are exercising our rights under it … enrichment is one of our rights,” the sources said.

They indicated they wanted Russia and China to be more forthcoming in their backing for Tehran.

“We do not have anybody beside us except our people, we will not let our people die,” sources warned.

In their view, the nuclear deal was proceeding smoothly until Donald Trump broke the flow last year. “We are a member of the NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) and have obligations and rights. The UN Security Council accepts our (uranium) enrichment rights under the NPT. We are not producing nuclear weapons or chemical weapons, it is forbidden by our religion.”

But the sources added: “If we want to make the (nuclear) bomb we won’t take permission from anybody.”

The sources said they had no doubt that the “Americans want us to give up. They do not want discussions with us. The day the Japanese PM was in Iran for a bilateral meeting but also to mediate on behalf of the U.S. and convey a message from President Trump, the very same day the U.S. imposed sanctions on Iran.”

The sources were emphatic about the direction ahead: “We will enrich as per our needs.”
