‘India-Russian Relations Like Old Tree With New Branches’


MOSCOW: India’s Ambassador to Russia DB Venkatesh Varma, in an exclusive interview to SNI Associate Editor Amitabh Revi in Moscow, outlines the multi-faceted relationship between the two countries. The envoy also talks about how both countries are dealing with a multi-polar world, the Prime Minister’s visit to Vladivostok for the annual bilateral summit and the Eastern Economic Summit.

Ambassador Varma has also served as Ambassador to Spain from January 2017 to August 2018. He was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva from October 2013 to November 2016. He has also been Director in the Prime Minister’s Office. He has an M.A., M.Phil in International Relations (Disarmament Studies).
In Russia, this is his third tenure since 1990. Ambassador Varma has also served in Tashkent and was the first recipient of the S.K. Singh Award for Excellence in the Indian Foreign Service, in 2010, for his contribution to the negotiation of the Civil Nuclear Initiative
