‘From Soviet Union To Russia, Ties With India Are Now Pragmatic, Not Ideological’


Moscow: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held their annual summit in Vladivostok in September 2019. Underscoring the seriousness of the engagement, India announced a $1 billion Indian credit line to provinces in the Russian Far East. At the fifth Eastern Economic Forum, the Prime Minister was the chief guest following Chinese President Xi Jinping being invited last year. While Moscow is keen to deepen ties with China to offset souring relations with the West, it does not want to rely too much on Beijing and sees India as a critical Asian counterweight. SNI Associate Editor Amitabh P Revi and Video Journalist Prateek Suri spoke exclusively to Maria Zakharova, spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in Moscow on India-Russia ties and the evolution of relations from the Soviet Union days.
