The U.S. has indicated September 1 is a date by which it hopes to reach an agreement with the Taliban. Shakti Sinha, Director of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and the ex-head of the UN team on governance and development in Afghanistan discusses the current status with SNI Associate Editor Amitabh P Revi. He advocates engagement with the Taliban while the peace process is on and post any deal. Sinha feels the Taliban will want to gain from India’s goodwill, impartiality and development assistance. He also says once the Taliban is in power, in whatever form agreed, Afghan interests will dictate a relationship with India. Sinha also talks about Pakistan’s control of the Taliban and whether the Presidential polls and the peace process are at loggerheads.
