We have Chinese Investments But We Have Indian Investments Too: Sri Lankan Envoy

The Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India, Austin Fernando, is not a career diplomat but a retired civil servant who was serving as Secretary to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena when his appointment as envoy to India was announced. Sitting in his spacious office in New Delhi’s diplomatic area where the Sri Lankan mission is located, Fernando who took charge in November last year fielded a range of questions during an interview with SNI’s Deputy Editor Parul Chandra. Walking the diplomatic tightrope, the envoy’s answers were measured as he defended growing Chinese inroads in the Indian Ocean island nation and played down sectarian tensions following the Easter Sunday terror strikes in April this year.
