As U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo embarks on his India visit amidst strain in ties between the two countries due to a host of issues including trade, he will hold talks with his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar—the man who was appointed foreign secretary by the Modi government in January 2015 just three days before his retirement. If Jaishankar is a seasoned diplomat and a pragmatist to the core, Pompeo, who has so far been trusted by Donald Trump with the top job, describes himself as “a man of faith” and is deeply Christian is expected to do some plain speaking on what the U.S. expects from India.
