There may be as many as 2000 foreign (read American) “advisers” in Iraq. They are reportedly spread across government departments and ministries, including the armed and police forces. Add to that four bases, two of them near Iraq’s border with Syria. It’s expected that some of the U.S. troops President Trump plans to pull out of Syria will be based here, ostensibly to guard against any return of Islamic State fighters. So U.S. troops seem set to remain in Iraq, for how long is anybody’s guess.
