External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj played host to a large number of journalists at the ministry’s annual media lunch at Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan on a sunnny winter morning on Friday. The beautiful setting was rural and the fare mouth-watering. “You complain that I don’t give bytes. I have instead for you today food bites and I hope you like them,” she remarked. For good measure, she added “I won’t take any bites off you”. The minister, however, did tell the guests that the invite was for more than a lunch. “It’s an opportunity for me to meet you all personally. At my annual press conference, you sit opposite me. Here, I have the opportunity to sit with you all.” In keeping with tradition, the minister moved from table to table, talking to all those seated around it. To repeated questions about her decision to not contest the 2019 general elections, she said her health didn’t permit it. But it didn’t mean she was quitting politics, she affirmed, reminding journos it’s been a long stint in politics that began in 1977.
