Friends who stand by you in times of trouble are always remembered. So amidst a fresh eruption of hostilities between Israel and Palestine, following what is being described as a botched intelligence operation by the Israelis in Gaza, some Palestinians were taken back to 1987 when the first Palestinian intifada (uprising) had erupted against the Israelis. During this uprising, Palestine which is reputed to produce olive oil of excellent quality was facing problems in marketing it. The then Italian foreign minister reportedly came to Palestine’s rescue and his country purchased nearly 22,000 tonnes of olive oil from the Palestinians. It’s an act of kindness Palestinians remember to this day.
