There’s a low-key buzz in government circles in New Delhi about the possibility of Chinese President Xi Jinping coming over perhaps in December for another round of Wuhan-style informal diplomacy. That makes it unlikely Modi will host him in Delhi. Then there’s Donald Trump who has declined to be chief guest at Republic Day 2019. But he could turn up in February, which election wise, would suit Narendra Modi admirably. The question is given the transactional nature of the US chief executive, what is it that India must give to have him here?
