Here’s another side to China’s naval activity. The Chinese, it seems, see Gwadar in Pakistan as a “logistics base” while Karachi is described as a naval base. How accurately this reflects China’s long-term plans for Gwadar is not clear. But ports and naval facilities are clearly a priority. A recent study revealed 75 ports all over the world where China has invested. The study estimates that at least 10 per cent of ports in Europe are China owned or controlled. It says that last year, China spent a staggering $20 billion on ports.
