China Maritime Strategy

China’s naval literature provides interesting clues to its maritime strategy. A reading of some of these accounts suggests China’s naval brass plans to build at least six aircraft carriers, which would give them long sea legs for the Indian Ocean and beyond. The current pace of naval construction points to a 350-ship navy by 2030. Old conventional submarines are being refurbished with air-independent propulsion while some others are being fitted with small nuclear reactors.
