Congo, Cobalt And China

Did you know that 80 per cent of the world’s supply of Cobalt comes from Central Africa, from mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo? Most of those mines are owned and operated by China! Cobalt is widely used in batteries and as the world moves away from fossil fuels, Beijing will have an iron grip over the supply of this strategic metal for next-generation lithium ion batteries. The Cobalt story underscores a deeper narrative: China’s infrastructure projects and loans tend to be concentrated in countries like the Congo, usually small and poor, lacking financial muscle and politically in the grip of corrupt local elites.
