Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, currently on a tour of Central Asian Republics, was in Kazakhstan on Wednesday. Apart from bilateral meetings with her Kazakh counterpart and delegation-level talks, India and Kazakhstan have arrived at a significant agreement. Later this month, a 120-strong Kazakh Army team will get its first experience of deployment in a UN mission. The Kazakh contingent will be part of the Indian UN Peacekeeping Battalion deployed in Lebanon from here on. So, 120 Kazakh Army soldiers will join 500 Indian troops in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in trying to keep peace in the volatile region. Indian troops, deployed in this mission since December 1998, will help the Kazakh troops settle down and gain experience. This will be Kazakhstan’s first experience of participating in a UN Mission.
