Oman’s defence minister visited India and left and the word is a lot of ground remains to be covered in key areas, notably the use of Duqm port. When PM Modi was there earlier this year, an MoU was signed on the Indian Navy’s use of Duqm but progress has been slow since then. This is attributed to Oman’s economic downturn, pressure from Saudi Arabia over its neutral stand on the war in Yemen and Muscat’s ties with Iran. Oman now sees a need to prioritise relations with Washington over any other. This could also impact its nascent moves to buy military hardware from India.
