India, curiously, has the same position as China

India, curiously, has the same position as China, when it comes to freedom of navigation through its territorial waters. The Maritime Zones of India Act 1981 requires foreign naval vessels to take prior permission for the right of innocent passage through its territorial waters. This is often the argument used by China to advance the claim that its laws and India’s are similar. India is now working on a comprehensive National Maritime Policy, the first draft of which has been given to the Niti Aayog that is expected to revise outdated approaches.
